Brief communication: Spatial and temporal variations in surface snow chemistry along a traverse from coastal East Antarctica to the ice sheet summit (Dome A)

چکیده
Abstract. To better understand snow chemistry in different environments across the Antarctic ice sheet, we investigated ions on a traverse from coast to Dome A. Results show that non-sea-salt (nss) fractions of K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ are mainly terrestrial particle mass nssCl− is associated with HCl. Spatially, totals higher interior areas than coast, seasonally, proportions summer winter. Negative nssSO42- indicates sea salts ice, marine biogenic emissions dominate SO42- throughout year.

متن کامل1-D-ice flow modelling at EPICA Dome C and Dome Fuji, East Antarctica
One-dimensional (1-D) ice flow models are used to construct the age scales at the Dome C and Dome Fuji drilling sites (East Antarctica). The poorly constrained glaciological parameters at each site are recovered by fitting independent age markers identified within each core. We reconstruct past accumulation rates, that are larger than those modelled using the classical vapour saturation pressur...
متن کاملVariations in snow and firn chemistry along US ITASE traverses and the effect of surface glazing
This study provides a baseline from which changes in the chemistry of the atmosphere over Antarctica can be monitored under expected warming scenarios and continued intensification of industrial activities in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the first study to measure more than 25 chemical constituents in the surface snow and firn across extensive regions of Antarctica. We present major ion, trac...
متن کاملGround-based Measurements of Spatial and Temporal Variability of Snow Accumulation in East Antarctica
[1] The East Antarctic Ice Sheet is the largest, highest, coldest, driest, and windiest ice sheet on Earth. Understanding of the surface mass balance (SMB) of Antarctica is necessary to determine the present state of the ice sheet, to make predictions of its potential contribution to sea level rise, and to determine its past history for paleoclimatic reconstructions. However, SMB values are poo...
